Our Week in Parrot-Dise...

We've been very busy in Rm 131 this week. We had a 4 day Author's Study of Van Allsburg with Mrs. Hartnett in the Media Center. She picked three awesome books for us to Compare and Contrast.

Our Reading skill for this week was Generalizing. This is a difficult skill to grasp. We have also been very busy working on meeting our 2nd nine weeks reading goal of 14 books. Just about everyone has been successful. Hopefully, there has been a lot of reading going on this weekend!

There has been a lot of laughter during my read-aloud! We started "The World According to Humphrey". It's about a hamster named Humphrey who lives in Rm 26. This novel is very entertaining BUT has an amazing lesson. I think the Parrots look forward to every time I pick up the book to read.

In Writing we are in our final stretch of preparing for the FCAT Writing Assessment. We are practicing 3-4 times a week and then conferencing the other days. We start practicing Expository Writing this week.

We are still working on Magnetism in Science and Fractions in Math.

Our First Day Back... Brrrrrrr!

We decided that winter has finally come to Jacksonville!

What an awesome first day back after the holiday. The Parrots just never missed a beat. We started our "final stretch" to the FCAT Writing Assessment. Our Writing Tool Belt is full and today we started learning to "dissect" a prompt to determine if it is Narrative or Expository. We will be learning how to plan our writing and practice writing to both Narrative and Expository prompts in 45 minutes.

In Reading, our skill this week is "Generalizing" and our strategy is "Inference".
In Math we have started to work on multiple digit multiplication. In Social Studies we used our laptops and worked on our map skills.

Here are some pictures from our first day of 2012!

Even Burma needed an extra "coat" today...
