STAR Parrot & Writing "Fun"...

It was a busy week in Rm 131...

In Reading we worked on Independent Reading while doing our DRA's. Today I introduced the Reading Strategy of "Visualizing by reading one of my favorite books.... "Runaway Bunny". It sure was a great book to help us understand making "Pictures" in our mind while we read. We will return to reading "Because of Winn Dixie" next week and expect to finish our novel. We will also be starting Partner Reading while Mrs. Gay and I take groups for guided reading.

In Math we are getting ready to start Multiplication.... which is just "Arrays".... be on the look out for items that come in arrays...

In Science we are beginning to discuss various land forms such as volcanoes. Who would have thought Science could be so interesting.

We really had FUN in Writing this week. We added two more writing crafts to our "Writing Tool Belt"! We discussed how Sensory Details and STRONG Verbs make our writing more "Colorful"! We used our senses and a package of Skittles to write a Super Duper Sensory paragraph. Then today we had a "Strong Verb" Play and made Strong Verb ladders using a Thesaurus. Check out our bulletin board in the hallway outside our classroom....

Parrot Birthday & A Friend for Chaos...


Boy! September has been a busy month for "Parrot" Birthdays. We celebrated another one today. Josh's birthday was Sunday, but his mom brought in cookies today so we could celebrate in Rm 131. He was such a good sport wearing all the Birthday "Garb"... Thanks for sharing your birthday with us...

When Mrs. G and I came in this morning, I noticed that "Chaos" was not in his perch... then I noticed he had moved to the front shelves and had an unusual friend that liked to sing and dance to "The Monster Mash"! You have to go W-A-Y back to remember that song. Chaos seems so happy to have a new "mechanical" friend! We named him "Mashy"... Welcome to Rm 131, Mashy!

Another Great Week in Parrot-Dise...

It's been another busy week in Rm 131...

First, Progress Reports went home yesterday. Please look over your child's papers, keep them, but send back the progress report signed on Monday. Any child that brings it back Monday gets a special treat!

In Reading, our main character in "Because of Winn Dixie" has branched out and made friends. We met an interesting character in Gloria Dump! She certainly has been misjudged. But Opal sees another side of her and shares the events of her life. We are predicting that she will become an important character in Opal's life. We also continued working on our skill of "Author's Viewpoint". Laptop Day was Friday and we worked on a Destination Success Activity on this skill. This next week we will not do a story in our reading series. We will be working on DRA's which will give us an idea of reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.

In Writing, we have moved on to putting sensory details in our writing. How to make a "black & white" writing become "living color"! We have a "TASTY" activity planned on Tuesday to help us truly describe our activity in writing.

In Math, we are completing our first topic and will be having our Topic Test on Monday. It will be on the Numeration skills we have been working on... Place Value, Rounding, and Comparing & Ordering Numbers.

In Science, we are culminating our Rocks, Minerals, & Weathering Unit.

We also started our RTI groups... Mrs. Gaspard is working on Math and I am working on Reading.

We celebrated a special birthday on Friday..... All the parrots want to wish Mrs. Gaspard a Happy Birthday!!!!!
