5th Grade News...

Due to meetings, I missed some really awesome things this week. I couldn't be there for the inspirational talk given by Mr. Wasdin. Mr. G and Mrs. Hartless said he was awesome. Could that be because he went to F.S.U.??? Unfortunately, I also wasn't there for the end of "Maniac Magee". I always hate to finish this novel because I love the character of Maniac. It was a great novel for teaching our reading skills. Now we are on to Mr. G's background study of World War I, World War II and the Holocaust. This will help us to understand the next three novels we will be reading. It will teach you how to take notes and then write a report.

I was able to come into Mrs. Hartless's room and hear some of her reading a novel to teach about the American Revolution. It is so neat to teach Social Studies with novels. It really makes history come alive. In Math today we were using estimating to help us check and see if our division answers were reasonable. We really have to use our common sense when we solve math problems...

4th Grade News.....

My pictures this week are of my "small" writing group of students from Mrs. Lamb's class. We meet once a week in the "Peck Cave", to work on our writing skills. We have been talking about changing our writing from "Black & White" to "Living Color" with the use of sensory details. Keontae, Christopher, and Matthew are doing a great job!

In the Room 131 we have just taken the selection test on "Grandfather's Journey". Next week we move on to our next story, "Finding the Titanic". Our skill is Text Organization. We will talk about the elements of non-fiction and how that type of text is organized. It is a very interesting story about the Titanic and the exploration of the wreckage.

Mrs. Gaspard gave the end of the Module test in Math today. She is still working on "Energy" in Science. She really makes science "come to life"!

Hope you have a great weekend. It's hard to believe we are almost finished with the first nine weeks.

5th Grade News.....

We are working on the Reading skill of "Story Structure" this week. We applied this skill to two novels we have already read and a Mr. G Read-Aloud. The Apes know all about how a fictional piece is "STRUCTURED... Setting, Characters, Plot (Problem or Situation with events), and the Solution/Resolution. In our current novel, we can figure out all the components except for the Resolution. We should be able to do that in the next couple of days. Sniff... Sniff... I can't believe we are almost finished with "Maniac Magee"!

What's next????? You'll just have to wait and see.....

Welcome back Mrs. Nelson.....

It was great to have Mrs. Nelson back with us today. But, where was Mrs. Gaspard? As usual, Mrs. Shedd was there to help out in Rm 131. She did a great lesson on Rounding Off. Looks like the MGN Studio Kids are Well "Rounded"!

All the kids had made cards and brought goodies to welcome Mrs. Nelson back. Gee, maybe I'll be out for a while... (just kidding).

Busy & Fun Day in 5th Grade.....

We are at a critical point in our novel, "Maniac Magee". Today's chapters were definitely ones of contrast! Once again, just when Maniac's life seems perfect, and he finally has "FAMILY", his world comes crashing down with the death of Grayson. We went from them dancing the Polka to him losing someone who had become a "Father" to him. Where will his life go next?

When we read about Grayson and Maniac dancing the Polka, Mr. G and I were surprised to find out how many of you had NO idea what the Polka was, soooooo Mr. G just happened to have some Polka music and since I just love to dance..... some of the Apes had a first hand demonstration! I have no pictures of Ricky dancing with me because he was taking my pictures... thanks, Ricky, I'm sure Mr. G will post something of you dancing!!!!

Also, today many Apes finished their rough drafts of their "Scary" stories. I am so impressed by how focused all of you have been while working on your stories. Can't wait to see them on the bulletin board!

This afternoon, I heard the Gibbons Apes working on an activity in Mrs. H's room, sooooo I decided to peek in and see what was going on. It was really awesome seeing them working together on a Benchmark Science Investigation on Animal Adaptation. I'm always impressed by how much fun Science is in Mrs. H's class!
