4th Grade News...

We have been busy preparing for the FCAT with our Blast Off material. We have discussed Main Idea and Supporting Details. We are also discussing strategies for taking a "test". We know that we read fiction differently than we read non-fiction. We look for "key" words in the questions and then skim for these words in the passage. Next week we will cover more skills and strategies.

After working hard on the Blast Off material... we are relaxing and reading an entertaining novel together. "The World According to Humphrey", is an interesting and entertaining novel through the eyes of a hamster. Humphrey has quite a sense of humor....

Looking forward to another great week of FCAT prep and finding out what happens to Humphrey next...

Love you, Mrs. P

5th Grade News...

Even though a short one, this was another busy week. We worked on building some of our reading skills like Main Idea, Supporting Details, and Vocabulary. The other half of being ready for the FCAT is knowing good "test taking" strategies so we are also discussing and practicing these. Everyone is really taking this work seriously. I know each and everyone of you will be "prepared" for the test.

Friday we celebrated with a pizza party for being #1 in cookie dough sales. Congratulations "Apes". We also threw in some "birthday celebrating". What a great way to end the week.

Looking forward to another busy week.

Love you, Mrs. P

Hi 4th & 5th Graders...

Hoped you had a great weekend. I missed you today. I had a test I had to take. Yes, even teachers have to take tests. It was all multiple choice and was over 225 questions. I used some of the test taking strategies that we will be talking about in Blast Off. I studied most of the weekend and was "Prepared" not "Scared"... just like you will be when you take the FCAT.

Can't wait to come back tomorrow...

Love You... Mrs. P

The Legend of the "Irish Pickle"

Hi... I'm Paddy O'Pickle
(Second cousin to Mrs. Pickle)
There are many beliefs as to where the legend of the "Irish Pickle" originated...

One belief is that an "Irish Pickle" is a cucumber grown by an Irishman, another belief is that an "Irish Pickle" is just a popular Christmas tree ornament that stems from Irish superstition, and some believe that an "Irish Pickle" is the famous O'Shea family pickle recipe that includes Irish beer in the mix... If you want to know the real truth you will have to come out to the farm and visit "The Home of the Irish Pickle" in Ireland...

5th Grade News...

We finished Jim Ugly today. This book really turned out to be somewhat of a "mystery". Finally, all our questions were answered. We had some entertainment while we were reading... our beautiful new shelves arrived. Mr. G had all our books back on the shelves by the end of the day. They look GREAT!

Most of us are well on our way to finishing our first draft of our Literature Response to Milkweed. As I proofread some of your papers, I could definitely tell that this novel has had quite an impression on each of you. I read quite a variety of "judgments" about the novel. I am impressed with the support you are finding for your judgments. It's hard to believe this is your first Response for this year. Keep up the good work!!!
Look what arrived in Rm 71 today...

Let me see...

Thanks for the beautiful shelves...
