"Short" but "Busy" Week...

Even though we only had 4 days this week, we sure were busy.  We started our week with an awesome guidance lesson by Ms. Coppedge. She read a great book and did a demonstration about the effects of "Bullying".

In Reading we are well into our novel "Because of Winn Dixie".  We now have met the characters, Opal, the Preacher, Fanny, and of course Winn Dixie! The Parrots are doing a wonderful job of reading the characters' dialogue and narrating. Wonder who we will meet next? 

In Math we are really rolling through place value, comparing and ordering numbers, and the skills we cover in Calendar Math. 

We are developing into writers with our practice of different types of engaging beginnings. The parrots love to come to the doc-u-cam and share their writing.

Thursday was "Laptop" Day. We took the STAR test in reading and spent some time on Destination Learning and Compass Odyssey practicing reading and math skills.

Awesome 2nd Week..

We are settling in to our routine after 2 weeks together. We welcomed two new parrots into Rm 131 and are well on our way to a wonderful year together.

In Reading we finished our study of The Stranger and took our first vocabulary, skill, and selection test. Using our Story Structure Tree Map, we learned how to write a thorough story summary. We also practiced writing Meaningful (Context Clue) Sentences. We have 36 Context Clue detectives in Parrot-Dise! In Writing we are continuing to practice various engaging beginnings.  Today we talked about Dialogue Leads and their conventions. Mrs. Lamb led us in a "Dialogue Hunt" through our independent reading books.  In Math we are continuing in Place Value into the millions. In Science we are talking about the Scientific Method, and did some 1st Class observations of "staplers"! We really enjoyed our fist issue of our Florida Social Studies Weekly. Ask you child about some of the State of Florida Symbols....

Incredible Week in Parrot-Dise...

We have had a wonderful 1st week! We are well into our routines and academics. In Math we are working on Place Value... Reading we have read "The Stranger" and are discussing the skill of context clues... In Writing we have discussed 4th Grade "rich" vocabulary and Engaging Beginnings we can use in our writing. Next week we will discuss the elements of non-fiction and read our first Social Studies Weekly newspaper.

Mrs. Lamb and I are looking forward to welcoming you to Open House on Tuesday 8/28. It starts with a PTA Welcome Meeting and then you are invited to the classroom to find out what to expect this year.  Hope to see you there...
