5th Grade News.....

This was a bitter/sweet week in Reading... We finished Maniac Magee. Did I ever tell you I love this book and the character Maniac Magee?? Oh, only 100 times..... The best part is that Maniac finally has an address, a home, but more importantly a FAMILY! This novel has been great for teaching every reading skill and strategy. But it has also taught us some important life lessons about racism and the importance of resilience and family. What more could you ask for in a novel?

In Reading, our skill was Fact & Opinion this week. I think Mr. G made sure we had lots of practice on that skill. What's your opinion?

I helped Mr. G read through your scary stories.... I even shared some with my extended day class. They were mesmerized and really impressed. Hopefully, they will be going to press soon. The Apes and Heroes are AWESOME writers!

I guess Mrs. Ryan and Mrs. Ross's love of FOOD is rubbing off on Mrs. P. because we ended our Novel by tasting Butterscotch Krimpets. Grayson and Maniac's favorite.

4th Grade News.....

We had another "FUN" and "EXCITING" week in Rm 130! We finished our story "Finding the Titanic and are now Graphic Sources experts.

In Writing, we continued to talk about Sensory Detail in our writing and worked on changing our Black & White verbs in "Living Color" verbs. Today we "Exploded the Moment" with the use of these crafts. Here are two examples.....

Putting toothpaste on you toothbrush...
"I grabbed my navy blue toothbrush and struggled to get the strawberry toothpaste out of the tube. As I struggled... Splat! The toothpaste squirted out on the floor."

Turning the pages of a book...
"I grabbed a dusty faded orange book from the back of the library, and started to slowly scan the pages. As I turned and turned, I saw prehistoric, green creatures with scales on almost every page."

In Science we continue to work on the Human Body Systems. We are now discussing the "MUSCULAR" System. Room 130 has muscles!!!!!

We celebrated 2 birthdays this week. If this continues I think Mrs. P is going to get FAT!!

Thinking about "Family".....

In 5th Grade we are reading "Maniac Magee" as our second Jerry Spinelli novel. Once again Spinelli has a character searching for family and what it means to him. Thinking about what Maniac is going through... made me look through some family photos. I found these two of my sons and their children. I have two great sons and most importantly, they are great fathers. I know how fortunate I am to have an awesome family. A really great author writes in a way that is engaging but also leaves an imprint on your heart with his message.....

Have your read any novels lately that have had that kind of effect on you? Tell me about them tomorrow in class.
