4th Grade News.....

It was another "delicious" week in the Ry/Ro/Peck Class.....

In reading we continue to work on Story Structure...we will be taking our selection test next week. We are construction specialist on how to build a good story. Bring on the test.....

In Writing we are finishing up our last three types of leads to engage the reader. Next week will work on taking one of our pieces all the way to publishing. We also took the District Prompt in order to see where we are starting at the beginning of the year and how far we will "grow" in our writing by the end of the year.

Math and Science has been a "blast" this week. In science we made cells....that sort of looked like cookies. They tasted like one, too!!!!! I'll bet you didn't know science could "taste" so delicious..... In Math we are talking about "Angles". Be sure to watch the video at the end of my post...... some how it ended up looking and sounding like the Seminole Chant.... could that be because Mrs. Peck and Mrs. Ryan are "Seminoles"??????? Of course Mrs. Ryan picked a few Gators to help her demonstrate the angles.......

Wonder what comes next week????? Just wait and see......

Love you.... Mrs. P

5th Grade News.....

What a week!!! We had our first flag raising for this school year. We love coming together in our amphi-theatre. Then we kicked off our reading celebration with exercise and the one and only "JJ". The Apes and Heroes were fortunate enough to have a personal visit by JJ.

In reading this week, our skill is Text Structure. We discussed how text can be arranged on the page in different ways. We also discussed the difference between Fiction and Non-Fiction and how it can be arranged on the page. On Thursday, we read several chapters of "Crash". We stopped just as we found out that Scooter is in the hospital......can't wait to read more and find out what has happened.

In Writing, we wrote to the District Prompt. This will give us a baseline for where we are in writing. From what I have read.....we have awesome writers in Rm 71 & 73. We also continued to work on our "Scary" stories. Now that we have hooked the reader....we are ready to get into our story.

Can't believe we have already spent 3 weeks together. It just gets better.....

Love you....Mrs. P

4th Grade News.....

The Ry/Ro's had another great week as we are settling into our routines. In Reading, we started our first Selection, "Akiak", the story of the Alaskan Iditarod Race. One of the two main characters is an Alaskan sled dog. We learned that "Characters" are one of the components of a Story Map. A story map helps us find our way through a book or story. We also began to talk about and practice short and extended written responses.

In Writing, we are continuing to work on learning different types of ways to engage the reader. Ask your child the types we have practiced so far. On Tuesday we will be taking the District Baseline Writing. We will practice it just as we will write on the FCAT Writing Assessment in February.

In Math, we continue to work on "Graphing" data. Graphing is FUN!!!

I hope to see all of you parents at Open House on Thursday night. There will be a PTA meeting at 6:00 and then you can come to the classroom at 7:00. See you there....

Love you.... Mrs. P
