4th Grade News...

We have a very busy week ahead of us.  We will continue to practice writing too Narrative Prompts and Peer Conferencing.  Are you ready for a Bar-B-Que???? A story bar-b-que that is!! We will be reading our Book of the Month an using the "Bar-B-Que" technique to learn about SYNTHESIZING when we read. This is a strategy that good readers use to put together all the pieces of a story.  We also will be decorating our door for the Student Council Contest, making Gingerbread Houses, and having our Holiday Party. It proves to be a fun-filled week.  I can't wait to share it with you!!!

Love you,  Mrs. Peck

5th Grade News

This has been a busy week in 5th Grade...

In Reading, we finished "Number the Stars" and finally started "Milkweed". This Holocaust novel will move us into Warsaw, Poland. Here we will see the plight of the Jews much differently.  Unlike the Danish Jews, the Polish Jews were not protected and the survival rate was devastating!  Our eyes will be "opened" and our hearts will be "touched" like never before.

In Writing, we have begun our World War I report.  After spending a day on starting with wonderful engaging beginnings...we are now working on the "meat" of our report.  Our goal is to report the key facts of what led up to and transpired during World War I, and at the same time let our "Voice" come through our writing.  We have some phenomenal writers in Rm 71 & 73!!!

Rm 71 & 73 has been "PICKLED"!!  Be sure to stop by and see our Holiday door decorations.  We are looking forward to all our holiday activities next week.
Writing and Sharing our World War I Reports...

Finally!!!!  We have started to read "Milkweed"!

4th Grade News...

We have been very busy this week...

In Writing, we are working on writing to Narrative Prompts.  On Thursday we peer conferenced to help each other revise and improve our writing.  We looked for positive parts in our partner's writing and then gave suggestions as to how to improve our writing.  That's what we will do when we reread and revise our own writing.

In Reading, we are still working on the strategy/skill of Inference.  We are looking for those "clues" and using our background knowledge to make LOGICAL inferences.  We are becoming great Inference Detectives!!!

Be sure to stop by our "Winter Holidays in Florida" Scene in the hall across from Rm #4. It's great to be in Florida!!

Writing Parent Night...

Last Thursday night, Mrs. Lee, Ms. Jenkins, Mr. Gibbons, and I put on an information night for parents of 4th and 5th Graders.  Parents were asked to write to a Narrative or Expository prompt.  Yes!!  just like you children do!  They then learned about all the wonderful writing crafts you children use in your writing every day.  I think they were impressed with all the skills you have learned to use in your writing.

4th Grade News...

We have been very busy learning about Prompts, Narrative Writing, and Expository Writing.  We now know the three parts of a prompt and the clue words that help us determine what kind of prompt we have.  We have written to two Narrative Prompts and are working on what we need to improve our writing.  Our "Writing Tool Belt" is filled and we are well on the way to being "TOTALLY" prepared for the Writing Test in February!

In Reading we are continuing to work on Inference.  We were able to practice this strategy in our new story, "Tanya's Reunion".  We are becoming Inference Champs!

Kindergarten News...

This week I started to work with Mrs. Watson's Class.  It's fun to work with Kindergarten again!  I was amazed with their "Writing" ability.  I read them two book and their ability to predict and understand what I read was amazing!!!  They even had me singing and dancing in Readers' Workshop! Then on Friday I had a wonderful surprise...Karson and Grace from Mr. Gibbons and Mrs. Whitelaw's classes came in to help!  They were wonderful with the Kindergarten students.  Thank you Karson and Grace!!!

5th Grade News...

"Number the Stars" is really reaching a pivotal point in the story of the part that the Danish people played in saving their Jewish citizens.  They were TRUE "UPSTANDERS"!  We have also had a great opportunity to practice our reading strategy of "INFERENCE".

More than any other class that has read this novel you have really become absorbed in the story of Ellen and her family.  I can only imagine what it will be like when we read "Milkweed" and "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas"!!!  I am especially impressed by how you are partner reading and discussing the novel.  You are doing a great job on your "Treasure Hunts"!  Keep up the good work.  The best is yet to come in our novel......
