4th Grade News.....

We are finishing up our Story "Finding the Titanic". We have spent a lot of time on discussing the structure of a non-fiction piece. We know that 50% of the passages on the FCAT is non-fiction. We also discussed how we read non-fiction differently than we read fiction.

This week we wrote to the October District Prompt. It was great to see some of the writing lessons we have covered carry over into our writing.

Have a great weekend....

Love you..... Mrs. P

A Surprise Visitor & a Gifted Pianist...
Ikrom (a 2010 Hartless Hero & Gibbons Ape) came to visit today. She was such a special part of our class last year. We've never had a student that could remember and use so many of Mr. G's "Gibbonisms"! It was great to see you again, Ikrom....

Hmmmm what's that wig next to Ikrom?

Meet Edwin... he is an unbelievable pianist. He has never had a lesson in his life nor does he have a piano, but he has taught himself from watching music on his computer. You can find him a couple of mornings a week entertaining anyone that passes by in the Multipurpose Room. I made a short video but was unable to post it. I love to hear him play. I'm so glad to have him as a student in Nelson/Gaspard class.

Edwin, YOU'RE AWESOME!

Edwin entertains everyone before school...

4th Grade News...

We've had a busy week in 4th Grade. Our skill for this story is Text Structure. This week we went on a "scavenger" hunt for the elements of Non-Fiction. The MGN kids did an awesome job finding many graphics that you find in a non-fiction text. We also discussed how important the information in these graphics is in order to understand what the text is about.

In Math, we worked on Math Puzzles using clues about place value to determine a "Mystery" number. Then we wrote our own Math Puzzles.... be on the look out for them on the bulletin board.

Today we had a wonderful Science assembly that tied into what we have been studying. I sat with the MGN students and was amazed how much they understood about forms of matter. Thanks for the wonderful assembly!

5th Grade News...

Mrs. Hartless is teaching about the beginning of our country's history. By reading novels, she really makes history come to life. The Apes are really tuned in to what went on during the birth of our great country.

In reading, the Holocaust Background Study has started! Mr. G is building some background knowledge for us before we read our next three novels. With a thorough understanding of the cause and purpose of the Holocaust, we will better understand the events in our next three novels. Actually, the "Apes" are really enjoying and soaking in all of the information Mr. G is presenting. They are learning to take notes, which will be the source of their next writing assignment which is on Report Writing.

In Writing, we are working on publishing our current Narrative Writing. We have great writers.... an I am sooooo impressed how the Apes LOVE to write! We should have some ready for the bulletin board soon!

2:10-2:40Reading Club

Here are some pictures of my "Book Club". We are very close to finishing our first novel, "The In Between Days". We will probably spend one more week on Inference and also finish the novel. Everyone in my Reading Club has increased their reading fluency and their understanding of the skill of Inference. Great Job, Peck Cave Dwellers!!!
