5th Grade News.....

It has been a busy week in 5th Grade. We continued to work on the Genre of Tall Tales and ended the week with our Theme 1 Benchmark Test. This was a good practice for increasing our reading stamina.

Today is was sooooooo good to get back to reading Maniac Magee. I'm sure by now everyone knows he is one of my all time favorite characters. He is in search of "FAMILY" and thought he had one with the Beales... but his unconditional love for them made him realize that if he loved them he had to leave the East End. We now have started another phase of Maniac's quest for family. Today we met and awesome character... Grayson. Will he teach Maniac some life lessons... or will Maniac teach him? We'll just have to keep reading to find out.

Mr. G read us the Book of the Month... "Pumpkins". To look at the cover you would think it was fiction, but, it is really informational. Perfect timing considering the time of year and Mr. G's love of pumpkins.

Hope you have a great weekend... I plan to rest and enjoy the football games.

Love you..... Mrs. P

4th Grade News.....

We miss you Mrs. Nelson.... Get well soon....

Mrs. Gaspard, Mrs. Shedd and I are doing our best to hold down the fort until you can return. The kids are working hard to make you proud.

In reading we are working on the skill of Author's Viewpoint. Our selection story, "Grandfather's Journey" has given us lots of practice on our skill. Today we had a competition... Boys vs Girls... and practiced our vocabulary. It was a tie and everyone worked together to show their knowledge of our vocabulary words for this story. I even saw some students putting some of the words in their writing. Our Vocabualary test is Monday and the MGN Studio kids are READY!

We started our next writing piece. I was so amazed at how everyone just jumped right into writing. We are working on making writing "Living Color" through the use of sensory details, color words, and strong verbs. We may be ready for publishing next week!

In Math we are working on "Rounding" off numbers. In Science we are still working on "Energy". As you can see we have had a busy week. It's hard to believe we are more than half way through our first nine weeks.

Have a great weekend....

Love you..... Mrs. P

Happy Birthday , Mrs. Gaspard

Wonder who had a birthday in Room 131 today????

Happy Birthday from the MGN Studio Kids.....

How about some cookies and punch.....

We like to celebrate.....

4th Grade News.....

This week we started discussing the skill of Author's Viewpoint. It's easy to get this confused with Author's Purpose. We spent quite a bit of time discussing the difference between the two. We also discussed some of our new vocabulary for our next story. Can you use "marveled" and "bewildered" in a meaningful sentence?

Science was really fun this week. Do you know how sounds differ in pitch? What happens when you strike a pitchfork and then put it in water? Get ready to get WET!

We had a wonderful time celebrating Mrs. Gaspard's Birthday. Have you ever heard of an age called 40... 11???? I think that's just a ploy to avoid saying you're over 50!

It was another fun week in Room 131. We know how to make learning FUN!

Love you.... Mrs. P

What do you know about sound.....

5th Grade News.....

It has been a busy week in Rm 71 & 73. In Science, after doing research on the classroom laptops, everyone is working on their posters of an Ecosystem. I even learned some interesting facts that I didn't know!

In Math we are still working on different strategies for solving division. It's interesting to see the different approaches to solve the same problem and arrive at the same answer. On Laptop Day the Apes took a practice assessment.

In reading we are discussing the Genre of Tall Tales. We discovered that a Tall Tale is both realistic and exaggerated. We are also well into Maniac Magee. Maniac is MY favorite Jerry Spinelli character. He goes through so much in search of "Family". The key word to describe Maniac is "RESILIENT"! No matter what life throws his way he always bounces back.

In Writing we have started our "Scary" stories. Some of the Apes shared their "Engaging" Beginnings..... we were "Hooked"!

Our first End of the Month Luncheon was a huge success..... There were many parents who attended. Keep reading... so you can come next month.

It was great to get back to Rm 71 & 73 after my trip to Tennessee.

Love you...... Mrs. P
