5th Grade News.....

We finished our Responses to "Up the Learning Tree". Be sure to stop by the bulletin board outside Rm 73 to enjoy some of them. Outside Rm 71 are responses to "The Children We Remember". They are awesome, too.

In Reading we are well into "The Great Gilly Hopkins". We are beginning to see just a "speck" of the tender side of Gilly. She really loves her mother...is she in for a disappointment? I know Gilly is pretty "spunky", even obnoxious..... but that is what has helped her survive. Did you ever think of what it would be like to be tossed from one foster home to another? Can you make a connection to Maniac? Wow! Mr. G picks great novels.......

There is a very special surprise in store for Rm 71 & 73tomorrow...... Be ready to be proud as peacocks and celebrate....... More on the blog tomorrow.....

4th Grade News.....

We have really busy this week finishing up our reports. Most of us are publishing and working on the cover for our report. Mrs. Ross made the comment that this class did much more outside research than classes in the past. I can't wait for you to give your oral reports. We will spend the first part of next week practicing with a partner and then start the class presentations. You have done an AWESOME job!!!!!

In reading this week we are working on two different skills. The first one was reality vs. fantasy. We are discovering that our stories in this unit have a mixture of both. This week's story, "Heat Wave" was quite entertaining. We decided the was definitely the author's purpose. The other skill we are working on is PLOT. This skill has multiple parts.......Conflict...Rising Action...Climax...and Outcome. We are becoming experts at identifying each part.

This week we tried something different when we worked on our story vocabulary. Once we understood the definitions, we partnered up and used them in sentences....but the kicker was we had to put context clues in the sentences just like authors do. We really put our heads together and came up with some phenomenal sentences.

Have a good weekend.

Love you.... Mrs. P

4th Grade News.....

What an awesome week. The Ry/Ro's really did "SHINE"!

We started our Report Writing. We are doing reports on animals....everything from the big cats to the great white whale. We are getting our information from brochures....the internet....and books. First we took notes on cards. Now we are taking that information and putting it into our own words as we cover each category about our animal. Some students have chosen to organize their report through the use of sub-titles, others are writing individual paragraphs. One thing we have learned is that a report doesn't have to be "BORING". We can use our writing crafts and engage the reader....we can also let our "VOICE" shine through the reports. When we are finished we will be presenting them to our classmates.

In reading, we finished our story "Cendrillon" and are ready to move to our next story "Heat Wave". Our skill for this story will be Plot.

On Friday we had our End of the 9 Weeks Award Luncheon. We had a blast. Many of the parents came and enjoyed pizza with us. We had two very special visitors....Mrs. Ryan and Baby Justin!!!!! Great Job!
